2. Warming up / Brainstorming
Today we will speak about fashion and style.
My friend from Britain hasn’t lived in a modern world for quite a long time. It’s a big secret but I should share it with you because I need your urgent help. She has taken part in one famous reality show living on a desert island (Survivor). Have you heard about it? So, having come back she understood she’s got a giant problem. Here is her recent e-mail. Let’s have a look what problem it is.
Hi, Vicky!
How’s life? What’s new? I haven’t been in touch for a while, you know. I wonder what is going on around? People wear the clothes I have never seen! All stare at me. I feel a complete wreck. I need you urgent help!
Wish you were here.
Waiting for you coming.

3) shoes with a pointed toe
4) bell-bottoms
5) mini skirt

Giving an opinion

From my point of view…
Frankly speaking…
If you want my honest opinion....

What other trends and fads can be connected with the word fashion?
What is fashion? (definition) What
do you KNOW about fashion?
  • fast food restaurants
  • reality shows
  • keeping fit
  • credit cards
  • designer labels
  • beauty treatments
  • muzak
  • graffiti
  • plastic surgery
  • budget airlines
3. Listening skills development
Look at the pictures of modern trends. Some of them are rather useful for people but some are absolutely useless. Guess 3 you think people will talk about (stick the smiles).
                        Listen and complete the chart.
Speakers
Trends
Pros and cons
A

B

What is your attitude to these trends? (check and discuss).  Each pair gets one more trend to discuss its pros and cons in the modern world.
  • plastic surgery
  • credit cards
  • muzak
  • reality shows
  • text messaging
4. Reading and speaking skills development
As we see, there is too much to see and to wonder in the modern world. I am sure that a person from a previous century will find it rather difficult to get used to all of these. In the contrary, the previous century seems strange to us and life is going on very rapidly. There is a famous quotation So many people, so many tastes and we may say so many styles. Do you think these modern trends make a person stylish? What is style I wonder? (definition).
Style is a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed.
Fashion is a popular or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behaviour.

My friend is working on a photo project about people’s styles. Here are some photos of people in the street. Which one would you describe as…
  • old-fashioned?
  • trendy?
  • scruffy?
  • casually dressed?
  • well dressed?
  • unconventional?
  • smart?
  • fashion victim?

Is it always right to judge people from their appearance? Which of these people have style in your opinion?
What would you like to LEARN about your style? It’s just the time to find out. Read the quiz, circle Yes or No about yourself and find out what 3 groups can people be divided into according to their style. Were you surprised at the results? What have you found out about your style?
After reading we’ve come to the conclusion that there are 3 categories of people…
1. Style Gurus
2. Good Lookers
3. Fashion unconscious
Work in 3 groups (divide with the help of pictures). Choose the most suitable pictures of people for your group and tell about them using the idioms.

IDIOMS
the centre of attention
hit the headlines
brand names
be in/out
be taken aback
short-lived trends
keep up with the latest fashion

5. Follow up / free speaking
So, we’ve talked about people of different styles. But all of us know that every person is a unique individuality who has never been before and will never live again. Isn’t it easier to enjoy your life without following trends, fashion and designer labels? Do we really need fashion?
PMI (Plus, Minus and Interesting)
Imagine that there is no changing fashion in the world. Find pluses, minuses and what is interesting about the idea.

6. Conclusions of the lesson
What quotation summarizes your key point during today’s lesson? What HAVE you LEARNT about style and fashion today?

″If you are not in fashion, you’re nobody″ (Lord Chesterfield)
″Fashion is what you adopt when you don’t know who you are″ (Quentin Crisp)
″Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance″ (Coco Chanel)
″Fashion fades, only style remains the same″ (Coco Chanel)
″Oh, never mind the fashion. When one has a style of one’s own, it is always 20 times better″ (Margaret Oliphant)
  1. Setting the hometask, evaluation

You have already learnt much about fashion and style today. You have worked in 3 groups and now I have 3 hometasks for each group.
So, style gurus, be attentive. You are to create a web page Fashion Week 2013 to demonstrate the latest trends in the world of vogue.
Good lookers! You are to create a vk. group Fashion Stars to write about the most fashionable celebrities nowadays.
And, of course, fashion unconscious. You are to create a web blog Fashion Victims to help those who are fashion addicts.
