Lesson Procedure
1. Organisation of the lesson, greetings, setting the
topic and aims of the lesson
Teacher: Hello
everyone! I am very glad to see you today. Hope you’re in a good mood and will
be hard-working and active at the lesson. You know, yesterday I went shopping
and bought this new sweater. What do you think of it?
Pupils: You look
great/wonderful! It suits you perfectly! It was designed specially for you!
etc.
Teacher: Thanks a
lot! Now I see that it fits
me like a glove (explains the idiom). I am sure that all of you enjoy
going shopping. It’s an inseparable part of our life, and today we are going to
speak about Shopping with the Stars.
What do you KNOW about shopping?
Pupil 1: We can do
the shopping at the supermarket, at the street market, at the department store.
Pupil 2: People
go shopping for food, for clothes, for presents.
Pupil 3: While
shopping we can pay in cash, by cheque, by credit card.
Teacher: You are
absolutely right! We will do quite a lot of today – read, guess, share our
opinions, work in pairs and in groups and I hope our work will be successful.
Everyone has got an Evaluation card
which will help both me and you to follow your progress at the lesson. After
the certain tasks you are to tick the results of your work and at the end we
will count and see. Don’t be lazybones, otherwise you can lose your shirt (explains
the idiom).

2. Warming up
Teacher: As I’ve
already mentioned I had a shopping spree
yesterday and bought a lot of things for my family members (a packet with
gifts).
§
I bought a nice scarf for my mum (Virgo).
§
For my dad I bought a new wallet (Taurus).
§
For my husband I found a perfect watch (Capricorn).
§
I bought an ornate mirror for my lovely daughter (Libra).
§
I bought some perfumes to make my granny smile (Taurus).
§
For my granddad I just found an old photo in a simple frame (Cancer).
Why do you think I bought
such presents? (learners give their ideas)
e.g. Your mum is surely a lady of fashion.
I suppose your dad is very
careful with time.
Teacher: Don’t you
think that my choice is connected with their star signs? Can you guess the star
signs of my family members?
3. Checking the hometask
Teacher: Let us
check how much you know about each of the sign. Match the star signs with their
characteristics and choose appropriate presents for them.

5. Listening and dialogical speaking skills development
Pre-listening:
Teacher: That’s
great! But when you go shopping you are sure to speak to the shop-assistant about
your buy. We are going to listen to the dialogue in a shop. There are some
pictures on the blackboard but the images are hidden. Be sure that I know
everything about this dialogue but I will keep it under my hat (explains the
idiom). Your task is to come to the blackboard one by one, turn the picture and
tell a chain story.
A woman is going shopping
|
She decides to buy some clothes
|
The woman goes to the fitting room
|
This dress is too tight for her
|
While-listening:
Teacher: Listen to
the dialogue, check your ideas and say what the woman bought. What is her star
sign? Why do you think so? (students share their opinions)
Teacher: Listen
for the second time and complete the dialogue.
Buying Clothes (SB ex.5, p.111)
A: Hello. Can
I help you?
B: Yes, can I try
these on, please?
A: Of course. The
fitting rooms are over there.
B: Thank you.
A: What do you
think?
B: Actually,
they’re a bit short. Could you get me the next size, please?
A: Certainly.
Here you are. Are they any better?
B: Yes, they fit
nicely. How much do they cost?
A: They’re £35.
B: Okay. I’ll
take them.
A: Thank you. How
would you like to pay?
B: In cash. Here
you are.
A: Thank you very
much. Your receipt is in the bag.
Teacher: How would
you answer such questions?
·
Can I help you?
·
Could you show me that one?
·
How much do the cost?
·
How would you like to pay?
·
Can I have the next size?
·
Have you got them in red?
·
Could I have it packed/delivered?
Post-listening (dialogical speaking):
Teacher: Now it is
your time to be in the customer’s shoes (explains the idiom). Imagine
that you are going shopping for presents. Talk to the shop-assistant (pair

Teacher: Design
your diary page with pictures of presents you want to get for your next
birthday and explain the reasons for your choice. Bear in mind your star sign.
Thank you for your work today! You were really
hard-workers and it is just the time to have a look at your evaluation cards.
See you tomorrow and have a nice day!
