Гарднер запропонував екзистенцій ний інтелект як можливий дев’ятий вид множинного інтелекту й визначає його як схильність людини ставити й обмірковувати питання про життя, смерть, природу і сенс буття, а також здатність вивчати, досліджувати, виявляти й аналізувати природу існування в його різноманітних формах. На думку науковців, розвиненість ЕІ позитивно позначається не лише на якості навчання людини, а й на її ставленні до життя загалом. На заняттях розвивати й підтримувати даний тип інтелекту можна за допомогою таких видів діяльності як розгляд теми з різних позицій і з урахуванням різних точок зору; пов’язування виучуваного матеріалу з глобальними проблемами; доповнення презентації матеріалу творами мистецтва; наведення точок зору відомих людей, які пропонують альтернативні погляди на обговорювані проблеми; створення умов для застосовування вивченого у нових контекстах і ситуаціях.
