Zhytomyr

Zhytomyr is one of the many towns in Ukraine. It has its own features which make it different from any other town.
People say that Zhytomyr was founded in the 9th century. The legend runs that the town was founded by Zhytomyr who was the favourite of Princes Askold and Dir. When Askold was killed, Zhytomyr didn’t want to serve Oleh and escaped to the Volyn forests and founded the town.
The traditional date of Zhytomyr’s birthday is the year 884. It makes Zhytomyr one of the oldest towns in Ukraine. If you divide the name of the town into two parts you will have “zhyto” and “myr”. The first means “grain”, the second means “peace” or “world”. It is really magic that the name has a symbolic meaning.
Zhytomyr’s historical and cultural traditions are very important. It has a big number of museums, monuments and other places of interest.
The town is the cultural and educational centre. Zhytomyr boasts of State University and Agricultural University. The museums include the Houses-museums of V.G. Korolenko and S.P.
