It's actually an easy way of meeting people, exchanging of views and spending of leisure time. Personally, I think the main advantage of Internet chat rooms is a possibility of communication with foreigners and development of foreign language. Another plus of it is a getting of completely different information, but sometimes this information can harm. On the other hand, this modern way of socializing is dangerous. Some people hardly know, who their companion is. The Internet is an ideal place for criminality, so everyone should remember about safety arrangements.
